How to Look After Your Hair Extensions (Bonds, Tapes, Clip-ins)
Whether you’re wearing bonds, tapes, or clip-ins, good aftercare makes all the difference. Think of your extensions like your favourite trainers — a little maintenance keeps them looking fresh for longer.
Here’s how to keep your hair (and your extensions) in great shape.
Brushing
Use a soft bristle or extension-safe detangling brush. Start at the ends and work your way up, holding the roots to protect your bonds or tapes. Go gentle — yanking through knots won’t end well.
Brush twice a day, especially before washing and sleeping, to stop tangles before they start.
Washing & Drying
-
Use sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner
-
Apply conditioner to mid-lengths and ends only — avoid the roots
-
Pat dry with a towel — don’t rub
-
Dry bonds/tapes first before using heat on the rest
-
Always use a heat protectant spray
Clip-ins can air dry, but semi-permanent extensions? Make sure they’re fully dry before bed.
Weekly Treatment: K18 Mask
We’re big fans of the K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask. It’s a leave-in treatment that works deeper than your average conditioner, helping repair damaged hair and keeping your extensions feeling like new.
Use once a week. Shampoo, towel-dry, apply K18, skip conditioner, and leave it in.
Sleep Care
Swap out your cotton pillowcase for a 100% silk one. Not satin — actual silk. It reduces friction overnight so your hair doesn’t tangle or mat while you sleep. Tie your hair in a loose plait or ponytail to keep things tidy (plus: natural waves by morning).
Sun & Swimming Tips
Sun, chlorine and saltwater don’t mix well with extensions. If you’re swimming, tie your hair up or braid it. Rinse with fresh water right after to get the chlorine/salt out, and use a leave-in conditioner or UV spray to give your hair a barrier.
Watch Your Sunscreen
Sunscreens with avobenzone can discolour extensions — especially lighter shades. Orangey patches are not the vibe. Switch to a mineral-based sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. They’re hair-safe and still protect your skin.
Bottom Line
Brush often. Use the right products. Sleep on silk. Keep them dry when needed. Avoid chemical-heavy stuff. And treat your hair to a weekly K18 session.
Extensions don’t have to be high maintenance — just well looked after.
